Tips for Keeping Your Car As Good As New

Jorge’s Body Shop in Miami, FL Shares Some Tips to Keep Your Car in Top Shape

The feeling of buying a car is one of the best you can ever experience. However, things could quickly change from happy to grumpy if you do not take the appropriate steps to keep your car as good as new. Taking care of your car may seem like a cumbersome task especially if you have a busy lifestyle, but it comes with some great benefits as you are about to discover.

When planning to maintain your car, you need to focus on two important aspects; the mechanical components and exterior looks. Once you have identified these two areas, it becomes easier to plan the entire car maintenance process.

Essential Car Maintenance

Change the Oil

We cannot stress enough just how important it is to make sure your car’s oil is changed regularly. Regardless of how good your car looks, if it runs without oil, there is always the risk of ruining the engine, which costs hundreds if not thousands of dollars to fix. Most of the time, when this happens, you may need to replace the entire engine.

As a rule of thumb, you should change your oil every 3,000 miles for conventional oil and 6,000 miles for synthetic oil. However, it’s always a good idea to consult your mechanic to find the ideal schedule for your car.

Change the Air Filter

When you take your car for an oil change, the mechanics always check if your air filter needs to be replaced. However, if you decide to change the oil by yourself, do not forget to also take a look at the condition of the air filter. Air filters, just like those in HVAC units, attract dust, dirt, and other materials when air goes through them, especially when driving on dusty roads. By trapping dirt in the filter, you’re avoiding any debris from making it into the car or into your engine.

Check the Coolant Level

The coolant is the liquid that cools your car’s engine when it overheats. When you drive your car without a coolant, the risk of blowing up the engine is high. While most mechanics check for both the air filter and coolant when changing the oil, do not always assume that they have. After all, seeing is believing. In the event that the coolant level is low, you’re running the risk of your car overheating, especially in warmer climates like Miami.

Not only can this stall out your engine and leave you with unsettling smoke coming from your engine bay, but in extreme cases, you’re also looking at mechanical damage, including damage to the head gasket, which can lead to serious engine failure.

Keep Your Car Looking Good

Wash regularly

The exterior of your car is what people see first before getting inside. If you live in a dusty area, you may want to clean your car at least once a week. However, when cleaning, make sure you are using products designed for cars. This minimizes the risk of damages to the car’s coating, which is expensive to fix.

Remember to wax

Waxing helps protect your car’s paint from bad weather, salty or hard water, and other factors that could influence the external appearance of the car. By waxing, preferably twice a year, the paint is protected, thus preserving the car’s shiny look.

Take care of the tires

Make sure the tires have good grip and are clean. After all, it makes no sense to have your car’s body looking clean and shiny, but with dirty worn out tires. Replace tires that look faded or worn out, and use a tire shine spray to protect the rubber and keep the car looking as good as new!
